Sounding the Sophia

  • Little Chamber Music Mountain View Cemetery Vancouver Canada (map)

Presented by Heather Beaty and Molly MacKinnon with the Little Chamber Music Series that Could.

Considered one of the worst nautical disasters in the history of the Pacific Northwest, the sinking of the SS Princess Sophia passenger steamship resulted in the deaths of all 367 passengers and crew who were stuck on Vanderbilt Reef for two full days while nearby help was unable to to reach them. Over 100 of the deceased are buried in Vancouver’s Mountain View Cemetery.

On the 100th year anniversary of the sinking of the Princess Sophia, The Little Chamber Music Series That Could has created a concert inspired by this historic event, exploring within musical settings the vibrancy of the people aboard the ship, the power of the natural world, and the implications of loss.

Little Chamber Music has commissioned three local composers, Nancy Tam, Kathleen Allan, and Mishelle Cuttler to each write a piece inspired by the Sophia’s sinking.
